TEMPUS INVITRO

Tempus in Vitro, brings to light the issue of the global sand shortage focusing on coastal sand mining on the Monterey Bay.

Sand is the world's second most used natural resource after fresh water. Every minute, the total amount of sand contained in this hourglass is stripped from the Monterey coast by the Cemex Lapis sand mine and irreversibly transformed into building materials like concrete, glass and plastics. The rate at which this precious resource is being consumed is unsustainable and is causing irreparable damage like erosion and habitat loss. Tempus in Vitro translates literally to time within glass. With it, Dellicarpini has created a visual reminder of how humanity’s need to expand has started the clock on depleting the world’s sand supply.
